a a a a a a a a a April 28, 2004 The Capital Times 3C OBITUARIES They were married in 1949, and in 1950 founded Maher's Soft Water Service, now Maher Water Corporation. Paul and Lydia raised their family and ran the business out of a prominent house on Main Street in Stevens Point. Paul was a pioneer in developing acid water treatments for the ground waters of central and northern Wisconsin. He was a charter member and president of the Conditioning Dealers Association, now the Water Quality Association of Wisconsin. Active in a variety of community groups, Paul served as exalted ruler of the Stevens Point Elks Club and was a vicepresident of the Stevens Point Country Club.

During a brief foray into politics and church chicken dinners, he ran for the Wisconsin state Assembly in 1964. Paul retired from an active role in the water business in 1 1980 when Lydia and he began spending the coldest months of the winter in Florida. An avid golfer until well into his mid-80s, he had also enjoyed success at bowling and curling in his day. Paul routinely read two daily newspapers from cover to cover and was a serious bookworm. His love of words and skillful turn of phrase stayed with him to the end.

Family and friends were important in Paul's life and he surrounded himself with both in abundance. They will remember him always for his humor, warmth and friendship. Paul is survived by his wife; and their children, William (Bonita Pawelski), Stevens Point, Mary, Madison, Eileen, Madison, Mark (Mary Kapter), New Brighton, and James (Gayle Knutson), Marine on St. Croix, Minn. He further survived by six grandchildren, Darcy, Danielle, Nate, Sean, Max and Casey; and four greatgrandchildren, Carleen, Corey, Christian and John Paul.

His parents; a brother, Laurence Maher; a sister, Florence Huston; and a niece, Sharon Maher, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 30, 2004, at 11 a.m. at SHUDA FUNERAL, CHAPEL, Stevens Point. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Thursday, April 2004, at the SHUDA FUNERAL CHAPEL. The Elks Lodge No. 641 will hold a Ritual at 6:30 p.m. and a general rosary will be prayed a 7 p.m. Friends may call again Friday at the chapel from 10:30 a.m.

McDougal, Adam LaVon EARTH Adam LaVon McDougal, age 82, of Black Earth, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 26, 2004. was comforted by the fact that he was able to be at home surrounded by his family in the days leading up to his death.

He was born on May 28, 1921, in Boscobel, the son of Theodore and Elizabeth (Pinkham) McDougal. LaVon married the former Elizabeth Elaine Edington on Jan. 12, 1946. Elizabeth preceded him in death on July 3, 2003. LaVon spent his life farming in his early, years and later drove truck delivering implements.

His greatest joy was cutting wood and keeping the stove stoked. Survivors include his children, Les (Lynne) McDougal, Ted McDougal, Rod McDougal, Elaine McDougal, Nancy (her friend, Dan Dennis) McDougal, Trudy (Eric) Garland, Pam (Dean) Herfel; 15 grandchildren; and a great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife; and a son, David. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Owen, age 99, died on Sunday, April 25, 2004, peacefully at the Stoughton Hospital. She was born on Dec. 21, 1904 in Footville, a daughter of the late C.D. and Agnes (Walsh) Owen. He was born on April 24, 1920, the son of Elwood and Wilhelmina (Bultman) Leonhardt. He met his wife of 50-plus years, Sarah Hamilton, on a blind date in 1950 at a bowling alley.

He built their first home 4612 Maher Ave. A farmer in Cottage Grove until he was 28, Walt then went to work for the state of Wisconsin Department of Transportation in 1947. He devoted 35 years of his life to that job, retiring in 1982. A hard worker all his life, never known to be idle, Walt enjoyed retirement by working for the Dane County Coliseum, driving cars for Zimbrick, and truly making his heart happy by returning to farming. From spring planting time to the fall harvest, Walt drove tractors and plowed for his friends and neighbors whom he cherished so much.

He was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and as a head usher. He enjoyed his spare time by following the Packers, Brewers, Badgers, icefishing, bowling, and a few good manhattans. A prankster all his life, he also managed to find time for his tom-foolery. In his healthier years, he and Sarah enjoyed traveling by car, boat or train to visit family and friends, and making many new friends along the way he was not a shy guy. Walt enjoyed a full life! Walt is survived by his wife, Sarah; children, Judy (Paul) Zoch, Tom (Renee) Leonhardt and Jean (Tom) Anderson; seven grandchildren, Emma, Kurt and Grant Zoch, Kyle and Jake Leonhardt, and Mitch and Holly Anderson; two sisters, Florence (Dave) Drotning and Lorraine Mackey; and his brother, Eugene (Rosemary) Leonhardt.

He was in death by his parents; brothers, Elmer (Arlene) and Marvin; and brother-in-law, Deane Mackey. STEVENS POINT Paul A. Maher, age 90, of Stevens Point, died' on Monday, April 26, 2004, at Harmony House Assisted Living Facility. He was born on March 5, 1914, in Madison, the oldest son of William and Nina (Ward) Maher. He grew up an adventurous farm kid and member one of the notable families of eastern Dane County. Paul attended Edgewood High School and studied journalism at UW-Madison before going into printing sales and becoming a flying instructor at Morey's Airfield.

He served as a flight officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, Paul moved to Stevens Point, to run a Civil Aeronautics Administration program at the Stevens Point airport, supervising and teaching flying. There he met his future wife, Lydia Jablonski. mond, and Footville for 10 years, retiring from the Janesville Schools after 35 years in 1970, as a first grade teacher.

Velma was a born teacher. She loved working with students and teachers. Velma continued in field after retirement as a thee supervising teacher of interns in Brooklyn, Oregon and Janesville for five years. During this time, she also taught primary education at St. Ann Catholic School in Stoughton, where she continued to teach until age 90.

Velma was active in her community where she was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, the Altar Society, the Entre Nous Study Club, the Heritage Garden Club, the DAR, the Stoughton Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of the Library, a volunteer at the governor's mansion for 18 years and a volunteer at the Nazareth House for 16 years. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Gladys Owen of Milwaukee; special nieces and nephews, Ann (Robert) Jarvis of Crystal Lake, Sue (James) Molenda of Greenfield, Kay Owen of Springfield, and Owen Milwaukee; three great ews; three great- nieces; three great-great-nieces and two greatgreat-nephews. She was preceded in death by her devoted sister, Violet Owen, in 2002; and her brother, Vern Owen, in 1989. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today, Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at 11 a.m.

He was born on March 19, 1922, at Sauk City, the son of Anton "Tony" and Josephine (Schroeder) Pertzborn. On June 12, 1945, he was united in marriage to the former Clara Reisinger and they farmed in the town of Dane. He enjoyed fishing, reading, short trips and visiting the farm every day since moving to Lodi 15 years ago. "Jack" survived by his wife, Clara Pertzborn; seven children, Gerald (Dorothy), Robert (Geralyn), Kenneth (Diane), Dale (Jacqulyn), Lynnette," Scott and (Laurie); and 13 grandchildren, John, Kevin, Derek, Jeff, Dawn, Shauna, Troy, Kathleen, Kelley, Daniel, Jackson, Steve, and Becky. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Helen Simpson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at the ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Lodi. The Rev. Nicholas S.

Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until the Mass on Saturday at the church. Ryan, Robert E. A E. PRAIRIE Ryan, age DU 86, SAC of Prairie Robert du Sac, died' on Monday, April 26, 2004, at his home.

He was born in Prairie du Sac on May 29, 1917, the son of the late Frank and Anna (Needham) Ryan. He was united in marriage to Florence Mulyck on July 14, 1953. She preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 1996. Bob was a U.S.

Navy veteran, having served in three campaigns during World War II, receiving numerous medals. He was stationed on a LST landing ship tank, which is one of two remaining LST ships, of which his is part of the Great Lakes Memorial Museum in Muskegon, where it is permanently docked. After discharge Bob maintained continuous contact with his Navy buddies and had an ongoing hobby and interest in service memorabilia. He is survived by two brothers, Francis Ryan of Hemet, and Donald (Gloria) Ryan of Reedsburg; sister-in-law, Shirley Hess of Baraboo; seven nieces and nephews; numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents; and wife; he was preceded in death by four brothers, Lawrence, Leonard and Edward Hess, and infant, Robert; and two sistersin-law, Lila Hess and Betty Ryan.

A memorial Mass will be held at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Sauk City, at noon on Friday, April 30, 2004, with Father levin Holmes offi- ciating. Friends may call at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment in St.

Hooverson Funeral Home Sauk City (608) 643-6430 Schroeder, Gloria Gloria Schroeder passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Newcastle Nursing Home, Mequon. The former Gloria Schmalz was born on May 3, 1926, in Norwalk, the of Arthur and Anna (Thorsen) Schmalz. The oldest of five children, she graduated from Wilton High School and following graduation attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison and LaCrosse. She accepted teaching positions in the Tomah area.

She married Carl Schroeder on Aug. 7, 1946. They began their married life in Tomah, moving to Richland Center, in the early 1950's where they resided for 12 years. They moved to Waverly, Iowa, for a brief time after which they settled in Middleton in August, 1969. Gloria was employed by Wisconsin Physicians Services in Madison for a period of time and later accepted position with Cuna Mutual where she worked for 14 years.

Recently due to declining she moved to Cedarburg, to be near her daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Greg) Lownik of Cedarburg; a grandson, Bradley of Cedarburg; a brother, Sylvan Schmalz of Arlington, three sisters, Greeta (Bob) Fletcher of Oysterville, Faith (Tim) Callahan of Tomah, and Connie Kenny of Tomah; a sister-in-law, Nona (Orvin) Buchholz of Sparta; and very special friends, Bill and Jeanette Schlinsog. Sta- ton, age 71, a well-known city attorney, died on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, after a long illness. Wayne was a native of Madison, attended the UniverWisconsin and then joined the Air Force in 1956.

He served in England for two years, flying many types of airplanes. Wayne had a passion for flying, was known for his quick wit, and his knowledge on many subjects. BLACK EARTH Wanda M. Turk, age 93, of Black Earth, died on Monday, April 26, 2004, at Heartland Country Village, Black Earth. The former Wanda Danz was born June 6, 1910, in Berry Township, to Adam August and Tena (Olson) Danz. She was married to Russell Turk on June 12, 1929, in Berry Township. Russell preceded her in death on April 7, 1995.

She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Black Earth and of its WELCA. She was a great seamstress and made many wedding gowns. She was a 4-H leader for many years. She helped her husband, Russell, with the greenhouse for a lot of years. Wipperfurth, age 84, of Dane, died on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the Waunakee Manor Health Care Center. The former Antoinette Ripp was born on June 13, 1919, in Waunakee, to Joseph and Mary Ripp. She married Allie Wipperfurth ain 1943, and he preceded her in death in 2000. She and Allie lived and they farmed all their married life in the Dane area. Antoinette enjoyed cards, crocheting, baking and gardening.

She was a member of Dane Senior Citizens Club and was also a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and its Altar Society. Les was born on Jan. 1, 1928, in Watertown, the son of John P. and Viola' I. (Willenbockel) Wurtzler. He graduated from Fort Atkinson High School and was certified by the state of Wisconsin as a professional engineer.

Les was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the 45th Division from 1950 until 1952. He was employed with Rayovac from 1970 as a senior engineer, engineering, retired manager, in 1981 plant as director of the alkaline division. He was also president of L.J. Engineering Inc.

7495 New Horizon Way Frederick, MD 21703 Plaintiff, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN to each and every person who owns, occupies, or controls land in the City of Madison, County of Dane, State of Wisconsin to destroy all noxious weeds per City Ordinance 23.29, listed below: NOXIOUS WEEDS (1) The term "noxious weed" as used in this section includes the following: Canada or other thistles, leafy spurge and field bindweed (commonly called creeping Jenny), Ambrosia trifida (commonly called giant ragweed) Ambrosia artemesifolia (commonly called common ragweed), burdock, Rhus radicans sometimes called Radicans toxicodendron, Rhus toxicodendron and Toxicodendron radicans (commonly called poison ivy), Urtica dioica (commonly called stinging nettle), and nonnative Lythrum salicaria and Lythrum virgatum and their hybrids (commonly called purple loosestrife) (Am. By Ord 11,298, 7-11-95). (2) Every person shall destroy all of such noxious weeds on lands which he shall own, occupy. or control and failure to comply with this paragraph shall subject such person to a forfeiture in accordance with the provisions of Section 23.60 (3) The term "destroy" means the complete killing of weeds or the killing of weed plants above the surface of the ground by use of chemicals, cutting, tillage, cropping system, pasturing livestock, or any or all of these in effective combination, at such time and in such manner as will effectually prevent such plants from maturing to the bloom or flower stage. In cases of failure to comply with this notice, the City of Madison may enter upon such lands and destroy or cause all such weeds to be destroyed which cost shall be chargeable as a tax upon the lands upon which such weeds were destroyed.
