on Saturday, June 5, 2004. ture princess was aged 8. Diana stayed with her father after the split and decades later told Andrew Morton, author of the 1992 book, Diana, Her True Story that her childhood was very unhappy and unstable. The biggest disruption was when Mummy decided to leg it. Thats the vivid memory we have the four of us (including her brother and two sisters).

People took sides. Various people didnt speak to each other. For my brother and I it was a very wish-washy and painful experience, Diana was quoted as saying. Shand Kydd acknowledged she sometimes had a turbulent relationship with her famous daughter. Testifying two years ago at the theft trial of Dianas former butler, Paul Burrell, Shand Kydd said she had not spoken to Diana in the last four months of her life and that the princess had returned her letters unopened.

Shand Kydd agreed with a statement by Burrells lawyer, Lord Carlile, that Diana, like many of us, could sometimes be a little tempestuous. Diana and her companion, Dodi Fayed, were killed on Aug. 31, 1997, in a crash in a Paris tunnel as their Mercedes was pursued by paparazzi. In an interview with Fox News in 1998, Shand Kydd said she had mingled with the public outside the princesss Kensington Palace home during the outpouring of grief over Dianas death. With literally thousands of people comforting, sharing, we were sharing a very deep hurt, said Shand Kydd.

But I think far too little has been said about what people all over the world gave to her. They nourished her, they made her smile, they gave her strength. Shand Kydd said she was frustrated by her inability to shield her daughter from the intrusions on her privacy. I wanted privacy for her, very often, when she wasnt working, she said. But it wasnt to be.

Shand Kydd also complained of the press intrusion in her own life, blaming it for the failure of her second marriage. Langdon, Mavis E. SUN PRAIRIE Mavis E. Langdon, age 76, died on Monday, May 31, 2004. She was born on March 28, 1928, in Paris, to Curt and Cecil (McClain) Paschall.

Mavis married T.B. Needham on Aug. 18, 1945. She then married Arthur Langdon in August 1979. Mavis was a nurse aide at Karmenta Nursing Home for 20 years.

She enjoyed gardening. Mavis is survived by four children, Carolyn (Greg) Needham-Wagner of Sun Prairie, Kenny Needham of Poy-nette, Larry Needham of Sun Prairie, and Barb (Denny) Stapleton of Brooklyn; six grandchildren, Melanie (Ron) Wagner Kruckerberg, Jennifer Wagner, Mark Olsen, Suzanne Needham, Nicole Rosa-Needham and Gregor Swenson; a great-granddaughter, Emily Wagner; a nephew, Kurt Paschall; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her hus- LONDON (AP) Frances Shand Kydd, who had an often turbulent relationship with her late daughter, Princess Diana, died Thursday at her home in Scotland. She was 68. Shand Kydds health had been failing in recent months and the grandmother of Princes William and Harry had been taken from her home on Seil Island, where she led a reclusive life, to a hospital in nearby Oban a number of times.

A spokesman for her son, Earl Spencer, said Shand Kydd passed away peacefully this morning, after suffering from a long illness, and this is now a private time for the family to grieve. Queen Elizabeth II sent a private message of condolence to Earl Spencer, Buckingham Palace said. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, the Right Rev. Ian Murray, said Shand Kydd was a deeply spiritual woman. She once said that her father had taught her to treat everyone the same, whether they came from castle, cottage or caravan.

That was a lesson she lived out very well, and many people, from all walks of life, will be saddened by her passing, Murray said. She was bom Frances Ruth Burke Roche, daughter of the Fourth Baron Fermoy. Her mother, Lady Ruth Fermoy, was a confidante and lady in waiting to the late Queen Mother, and was later said to have had a hand in promoting Dianas marriage to Charles. Prince Charles said his former mother-in-law will be sorely missed. Prince William said he had his brother Harry are veiy upset by the death of our grandmother and we will miss her a lot.

Shand Kydd married Edward John Spencer, 12 years her senior, in 1954 at Westminster Abbey. They had three daughters Diana was the youngest and one son. The marriage foundered in 1967 when she fell in love with Peter Shand Kydd, a married wallpaper heir, and the couple divorced in 1969. Shand Kydd remarried in 1969 when the fu Get my 8 lb. Twenty-four hours later, they were asked to identify the interrogator in a lineup, a photo spread or a series of photos. The results: 30 percent accuracy in the live lineup, 38 percent accuracy in the photo spread and 49 percent accuracy in the series of photos. By comparison, the other half of trainees, in less threatening interrogations, were able to pick out their interrogators with greater accuracy, from 62 percent in the live lineup to 76 percent in the series of photos. This is the study we have been waiting for, said Elizabeth Loftus, a psychologist at the University of California at Irvine and an expert on the accuracy of eyewitness testimony.

Loftus work over the past two decades has shown that memory may seem vivid but is often inaccur Daley, Autumn Lin TEXAS MADISON Autumn Lin Daley, age 10, passed away at University Hospital on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. Twenty percent did not even run their hands under water.

Womens hygiene was only slightly better: Sixty-six percent washed their hands with soap, the students found, with 7 percent leaving without even rinsing their hands. The study by students enrolled in a Basic Research Methods course at Hunter observed 2,341 individuals in restrooms in transportation centers, department stores, museums and a food court between March 29 and April 19. Only 323 of those observed were men, simply because most of the students taking the course were female, explained Hunter College sociology Professor Peter Tuckel. Clearly, there is a gender gap, Tuckel said. A more recent study by Wirthlin Worldwide of 7,451 people found that more than 30 percent of bathroom users in New York City airports did not wash their hands, while in Toronto fewer than 5 percent neglected to do so.

That study also found women far more likely to wash their hands than men, but did not make a distinction between using only water and using soap and water, Tuckel said. Tuckel said the Hunter students observations found the hand-washing gender gap narrowed when only the men who used stalls, as opposed to urinals, were compared to women: 57 percent of men using stalls washed their hands with soap and water compared with 69 percent of women in similar settings, the study found. i RICK STEVENSASSOCIATED PRESS Torch travels through Australia Australian Olympian Zali Steggall waves as she holds the Olympic torch aloft today on the Sydney Harbor Bridge during the flames two-day tour of Australia. The scientists also wanted to know how accurate people were in being able to say no when the interrogator was not included in the lineup or photos.

The high-stress group said no with 100 percent accuracy when shown a series of 12 photos. But they said no only 55 percent of the time in the live lineups and 52 percent of the time when shown the photo spreads. The low-stress group fared much better on these experiments. Prosecutors argue that the poor victim was so shocked that shed never forget that face, Loftus said. This study suggests that they do forget.

Stress impairs accurate IDs By Jamie Talan Newsday A Yale University study suggests that eyewitness testimony may not be all its cracked up to be. Stressful conditions impair the accuracy of making an identification, said Dr. Charles Morgan in, an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine.
