Washington Ave (608) 249-6666 the New York Mercantile Exchange, joining their accounting and statistical department. Later she spent many productive years at the Commodity Research Bureau. She retired in 1978, after 15 years as office managercontroller for the Merchandising Display Corporation. After retirement she moved to the San Diego area and continued to use her accounting skills by helping small businesses develop their bookkeeping systems. Lillian moved to Madison 11 years ago.

She was a great cook and a talented artist and poet. Her always tasteful cooking was notable for the lack of recipes. Friends and family who wanted to learn cooking from her were told a little of this and a pinch of that. In addition to her skills with painting and drawing, she delighted in turning throwaway objects into art projects. In later years, she would turn discarded eyeglass lenses into hand-painted pins and pendants for friends and neighbors.

Ever the business manager she sold some of this work to admiring strangers. In more recent years, poetry took more of her creative energies. She delighted in the idea that she was still being asked to read and discuss her poems well into her eighties. She was modestly successful having been published in a number of regional collections and local reviews. In 1994 her poem The Old Pot was published in The Glacier Stopped Here, An Anthology of Poems by Dane County Writers.

Always the wordsmith, Lillian enjoyed doing the New York Times crossword puzzle (in pen) and playing (and usually winning) Scrabble. MIDDLETONMADISON Lillian M. Saffian, age 89, died on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson Hospice Center. Lillian was bom to Elsie and Phillip Levy in Brooklyn, New York on Dec. 31, 1913.

She was a New Years Eve baby and continued to revel in the idea of people coming together to celebrate New Years Eve and her birthday for the rest of her life. She graduated from James Madison High School in Brooklyn in 1931 and later attended Brooklyn College. She married Burt on April 11, 1936, and they shared 23 happy years together before Burts untimely death in 1959. Lillian decided that she would have a career long before it was popular for a wife and mother to join the work force. In 1932, she became the first woman hired by to get ballistics testing on gun Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Conen ruled Bembenek must pay for the testing, which will be done by the cases original examiner and an expert hired by Bembenek.

Woehrer estimated the tests and the experts pay will cost about $30,000. Conen also said the state crime lab would do the testing after other DNA testing is done on two people the defense considers possible suspects. Bembenek hired the lab, Orchid Cellmark of Nashville. Bembenek, 44, was convicted of murdering Schultz, the ex-wife of Bembeneks husband at the time, Elfred Schultz. The former Playboy Club waitress was sentenced to life in prison but escaped in 1990 and fled to Thunder Bay, Ontario.

She was later captured and reached a deal with prosecutors in 1992 in which she pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was released from custody.
