a a a a a a a a Friday Afternoon, June 22. 1945 MADISON THE CAPITAL TIMES WISCONSIN Home Owned Home Edited Home Read 3 It Happened Last Night EARL -I've been trying to NEW improve feminine relations (and boy, I've got some feminine gelations, that need improving), am with an electrifying way for dames to avoid yanking up their stockings in public. I consider the way gals bend over, lift up their dresses, and haul their hose up around their thighs, is one of the ugliest sights in the world today. Nowadays, when the cuties wear so little they can get dressed faster'n a fireman, there's no excuse for them not getting their socks anchored. I recently sounded off to that effect in this column, after Anne Baxter had told me there nothing for a gal to do but pull 'em up.

She pulled 'em up while we talked. Miss Bankhead Tallulah Bankhead is another My Beautiful Wife another. figured that these smart women knew everything, so I wrote anybody came up with a solution. I'd give the first one suggesting it a pair of nylons. So now I pay off.

YOU USE Scotch tape or adhesive tape. (Or of course the standard garter belt.) THE NIGHT'S GAG Paul Whiteman: "What kind of saddle do you want on this horse? English style or Western?" Glenn Riggs: "What's the difference?" Whiteman: "The Western has a horn on it." Riggs: "Oh, a horn won't be necessary. I'm going to ride in heavy Of course some frivolous parties suggested the gals use leg makeup. "My gal." said Comedian Jackie Gleason, "put some leg makeup on her face by mistake, and got a run in her nose." Lrae Nosliw (pronounced Ray Nozleev), the great Polish wit who is now visiting our shores, principally Toots Shor's, commented acidly: "Today the American girls up their legs, their backs and their toenails. In fact they make up everything but their minds." So we flung that sort of answer out.

First in this veritable deluge of mail was a tender epistle from a redheaded model, Mary L. Pope, 24, who sells millinery. She wrote that she used adhesive tape The hold 'em up her stockings. I MENTIONED THIS--mentioned ROARED it-to my B. W.

"Oh, that would hurt your skin," she protested prissily. "I have tough skin, I can take it." snorted Miss Pope. "I snip off about 2 inches of tape, stick one inch on the front of my stocking and one inch on the front of my bare leg. I do the on the back of my leg. Girls longer stockings should criss-cross the tape for double security." "So YOU SEE!" I howled to the B.

W. Marilyn Maxwell, the beautiful blonde movie actress who happened to be with a us, chimed in that the Hollywood babes often adhesive or Scotch tape. Wither New York dolls wrote in about tape, too. So Miss Pope wins pair of nylons, and it's too bad I can't give them to her. I know she wouldn't want black market nylons.

So, instead, I offered her two tickets to "Up In Central Park," or an autographed copy of my book. Miss Pope, who must be crazy, or something, took the two tickets to "Up In Central Park." TO ALL THE lovely lovelies who wrote in suggesting garter beltsbut really! Garter belts gracias, are, standard for and this are a little competition too well known for a new idea; why, I even know a who once snapped a garter belt. But I thank yez one and all writing in, and I confess you're smarter than I Fever, thought. I guess silliest idea came from Jay Burton, male, who said a gal can keep her stockings from falling down by standing on her approached one lady and said, "Pardon me, how do avoid jerking your socks you when they creep?" She glared at him angrily and said, "You mean, how do I avoid socking jerks when they start to be creeps!" That ends today's lesson. THE MIDNIGHT EARL By Earl 1 Wilson and Paul Denis MILLIONAIRE Howard Hughes, who's around town wearing sneakers (and clothes, too, of course), says his famous controversial Russell movie, "The Outlaw," will be released Labor Day through United Artists, which has withdrawn from the Hays office (which had refused to o.k.

A Pasadena woman, Mrs. Virginia Kuppinger, bought Lupe's 12-room Spanish house for 750 after 30 minutes of bidding Thursday. It had been appraised for tax purposes at $60,000. Mrs. Kuppinger said she probably would the residence.

Robert Bridges, 33. Truax field soldier convicted of molesting a 7-year-old girl, will not receive indigent fees for representing the soldier, Circuit Judge Reis ruled today. The attorneys, Joseph G.

Hirschberg, H. M. Morrissey, and L. A. Squire, asked the county to pay $200 fees for representing Bridges at preliminary hearing in superior court and through the trial in circuit court and for additional tees to carry an appeal to the state supreme court.

Judge. Reis previously denied the request for appeal fees, holding that to be a matter the supreme court to decide. Today, he denied the fees for work the attorneys did in superior and circuit courts. The judge denied the attorneys' request on the grounds that Corp. Bridges is not a pauper as he receives compensation from the army and is employed here, that the soldier had several hundred dollars when the trial opened even though he had none when it ended, and that the application was filed too late, having been presented to the court after the trial.
