Gunderson East Funeral Cremation Centers 5203 Monona Drive (608) 221-5420 www.gundersonfh.com Sarbacker, Roy BLACK EARTH On Saturday afternoon, Sept. 5, 2009, Roy Sarbacker, age 92, let go of earthly struggles and went home to God.

He was devoted to his beloved wife of 67 years, Helen (Brockmann) Sarbacker; even as he fought the pneumonia that ended his life, his concern was for her. He was a caring, supportive father to Ann (Jeff) Wick and a wonderful grandfather to John Wick and his wife, Keesha (Hill) and Barbara Wick and her husband, Cody Statz. In 1973, Roy and Helen survived the traffic accident that took the life of their son Bill, who was a high school senior at the time. Roy was also preceded in death by two nephews, Ralph Sarbacker and Russell (Elvira) Sarbacker. In addition to Roy's immediate family, survivors include, Helen's brother, Donald (Grace) Brockmann; Don's sons, Denny (JoAnn) and Cal (JoAnne); their mom, Irene Brockmann; a nephew, Ron Sarbacker: and more distant relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

Roy lived a long life filled with family and friends, with hard work to make a living, with countless hours committed to community service, and with quiet faith. Then there were his wonderful stories, hundreds of them; we knew a story was coming when he got that look on his face. Roy was born in Black Earth on Dec. 19, 1916, the son of John H. and Ida (Harmening) Sarbacker.

He and his two older brothers, Orlin and Earl grew up in downtown Black Earth, where their father ran a blacksmith shop. Roy graduated from Black Earth High School in 1935 and immediately went to work for Patron's Mercantile Co-op. This was in the midst of the Depression, and he felt fortunate to have a job, even though the workday was from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. or later, and they worked six days a week.

Roy and Helen were both working at "PM Company" when they were married on Sept. 1, 1942. Later employment included the A. Hoff Company in Mount Horeb, Badger Ordinance Works, and driving a route for Red Dot Potato Chips. From 1951 to 1955, Roy and Helen worked long hours their own store, City Food Market, in Mount Horeb.
