Johnson, Glen R. RIO Glen R. Johnson, age 63, of Rio, died on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Glen was born on July 31, 1940, in Portage, the oldest of two children born to Willard R. and Arlene (Gunderson) Johnson. Glen graduated from Rio High School in 1958. Glen worked at several jobs during his lifetime. He worked at Rio Glove Factory, he operated heavy machinery at gravel pits in Wyocena and Appleton, and he also worked at the canning factory in Poynette.

Glen was united in marriage to the former Ava Wheeler on Feb. 24, 1990, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Iowa. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (N.R.A.). Glen enjoyed his dogs, his garden, his time spent in the Woods, particularly splitting wood, and he enjoyed hunting turkey and deer. He is survived by his wife, Ava Johnson of Rio; his mother, Arlene Johnson of Rio; a daughter, Amy Johnson of Wisconsin Dells; two step-daughters, Linda Rahn of Murphy, N.C., and Pamela (Keith) Miller of Fall River; a sister, Elaine (Lyall) Eng of Stoughton; four step-grandchildren, James (Victoria) Salz-wedel, Justin Sugden, and Sarah and Katie Miller; and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard R. Johnson, on Aug. 21, 1995. Funeral services for Glen R. Johnson will be held on Monday, June 14, 2004, at 7 p.m., at the VANGEN FUNERAL HOME, in Rio, with the Rev.

BEAVER DAM Joan H. Edwards, age 62, of Beaver Dam, died on Thursday, June 10, 2004, at her home. She, was born on July 9, 1941, in Madison, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Briggs) McCaughey. She married Larry Edwards on Jan. 26, 1963, in Madison.

Joan lived in Madison until 1970. She then moved to Montana and Spokane, returning to Wisconsin in 1976. Joan worked at Nancy's Notions for eight and a half years. She enjoyed classical music and sang in the church choir. Survivors include her husband, Larry Edwards of Beaver Dam; two children, Thomas "Tom" (Kathleen Edwards of Afton, and Kathrine "Katey" (Christopher) Hankes of Brooklyn Center, grandchildren, Jacob and Andrew Edwards; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Private family services will be held with the Rev. Mark Swanson officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Paul Gar-rett, age 48, of Ocala, passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Ocala, Fla. Paul was born in Petoskey, and raised in Madison. He moved to Ocala, in 1990 from Gainesville, Fla.

Paul retired as a chief petty officer from the United States Navy. He was a Christian and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He is survived by his wife, Amy H. Garrett of Ocala; his father, Jack Garrett of Earleton, a sister, Debbie Garrett of Madison, and a step-mother, Janet Garrett of Earleton, Fla. He was preceded his death by his mother, June Garrett.

She worked for several years as an oral surgery assistant in Rock-ford, 111. Merry, age 77, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2004, at St. Marys Hospital in Madison. She was born on Oct. 24, 1926, in Boaz, the daughter of Elbert and Mabel (Miller) Brewer. She was united in marriage to Dr.

Gordon Merry on Sept. 11, 1948, in Richland Center. Mrs. Merry had been a resident of the Sun Prairie area for the past 50 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sun Prairie.

Marian graduated from St. Mary's Medical School of Nursing in 1948, as a Registered Nurse. She was the office managei surgical assistant from 1954 until 1994, at the Merry Veterinary Hospital. Marian loved arts and crafts, sewing, macrame and gardening. Mrs.

Merry is survived by her husband, Gordon of Sun Prairie; sons, Steve (Jann) Merry M.D. of Hartford, David (Martha) Merry D. V.M. of Cincinnati, Ohio, Roger Merry J.D. of Monroe, and Timothy (Paula) Merry D.D.S.

of Germantown; her daughter, Judy Merry R.N., M.S.N, of De-Forest; her grandchildren, Matthew Merry, Ginger Merry, Daniel "Merry, Justin Merry, Leah Burroughs, William Merry, Michael Merry, Courtney Merry, Joshua Merry, Kyle Merry and Jenna Merry; her brother, Duane Brewer of Viola; her sisters, Arlene Ostrander of Rockaway Beach; and other relatives and friends. HERNANDO, MISS. Carl R. Personke, born in Detroit, on April 17, 1929, died in Hernando, on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was in the Korean War as a Marine and a UW-Madison Englisheducation professor for 29 years. He was a beloved husband, father, -father-in-law and grandfather.

He accepted and loved all whom he knew. He is survived by his son, Curtis Personke (Mary) of Sun Prairie; grandson, Bryan Personke; step-grandchildren, Scott, Cas-sie and Jenny; a brother, Charles Personke of Royal Oaks and a sister, Gloria Schantz of Royal Oaks, Mich. He was preceded in death by his wife, Don-nell Personke; and son, Carl E. Personke. There was a memorial at Trinity Baptist Church in Hernando, on Friday, June 4, 2004.

Betts, age 83, died surrounded by her children, on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Skaalen Home. Fannie was born on July 11, 1920, in the upper peninsula town of Republic, Mich.

She was the youngest of three daughters born to Finnish immigrant parents. Fannie had a very rewarding career as an R.N. and one of her most memorable experiences was working in the children's polio wards during the 1940s. She was also a painter and an avid reader. She loved the classics, but also read anything that would spark her imagination and knowledge of the world around her.

She came from a long line of writers, having written her autobiography long after her mother and uncle had done the same. She loved speaking Finnish whenever she had the chance. While working as a nurse in Chicago, she met Joseph Betts. They married in 1943, and after Joseph returned from the war, they settled in the Chicagoland area where they had three daughters and one son. She was an active member of her children's PTA, staunch supporter of local causes and a very good friend to all who knew her.

She even baked fresh bread for all the neighborhood children when they arrived home from school. She is survived by her four children, Margaret (Al) Michaels of Oregon, Katherine (Mike) Henry of Edgerton, Joseph (Janice) Betts of Stoughton, and Mary (Jim) Chapin of Racine; her sister, Sue Tierney, of Ishpeming, five grandchildren, Christopher Michaels, Jason and Aaron Chapin and Kyla and Me-linda Betts; and two nephews, Tom Zastrow of Streamwood, 111., and Jim Zastrow of Elgin, 111. She also had many great-grandnieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; and her sister, Joanne Zastrow. A memorial service will be held at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 848 E.

Bowar, age 84, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Cen Bowar. On June 28, 1945, Jerome was united in marriage to Ada Riley at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sun Prairie.

Since his retirement in 1987, Jerome and Ada loved their time spent together at their home in Tuscon, Arizona. Jerome's pastime was spent gardening, bowling, golfing, coin collecting, and stitching. He also enjoyed spending time playing his man-' dolin and banjo. Most of all he cherished the time spent with his wife and family. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Ada, Jerome is survived by his four children, Diana (Rick) Peterson of McFarland, Cheri (Punk) Car-ley of Dodgeville, Ginny (Dave Murphy) Bowar of Baraboo, and Doug (Colleen) Bowar of Mid-dleton; 10 grandchildren, Graham, Kim, Karen, Jesse, Travis, Elliot, Molly, Erin, Monica and Lacy; four great-granddaughters, Karlie, Alix, Taylor and Amber; a brother, Wilfred (Annabelle) Bowar; four sisters, Betty Kesse-nick, Jeanette (Leo) Ziegler, Mary Ann (Jim) Connors and Ruth (Duane) Maly; a brother-in-law, Joe Borrelli; and a sister-in-law, Gwen Bowar.

He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was born on Sept. 22, 1924, the son of Alma (Epright) and Vern Dosch. He married Loretta Decot on Nov. 10, 1943.

Melbourne farmed in Ash Creek for many years before moving to Richland Center. He worked for Mac McKenzie and also was a Erivate builder of homes with is brothers. Following his retirement, he enjoyed his time with family and friends, camping, fishing, and playing cards. Survivors include his wife, Loretta Dosch of Richland Center; and five children, Wayne Dosch of Richland Center, Dennis and Marge (Bee) Dosch of Richland Center, Janet (Arden) Olson of Muscoda, Betty (Steve) Morel of Muscoda, and Ruth (Terry) Scott of Richland Center. GALENA, ILL. Kathryn M. Heim, age 82, of Galena, went to live with her Lord Jesus on Friday, June 11, 2004. She died at the Galena Stauss Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Kathryn was born on May 7, 1922, the daughter of John and Margaret (Mohr) Bauer.

She lived a'll her life in Galena. She was united in marriage to John W. Heim on July 11, 1939, at Divine Word Seminary in Ep-worth, Iowa, and he preceded her in death on June 26, 1982. Her uncle, Father William Bauer performed the ceremony. She was a life long member of St.

Mary's Catholic Church, the adult choir, and a 58-year member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She did volunteer work at the Galena Hospital and Nursing Home, served on the election board, helped with blood drives and was a member of the Eagle's auxiliary. Besides being a devoted wife to her and a loving mother of her eight children, she was a true lady who lived her Catholic faith everyday of her life. She is survived by five daughters, Janice (Melvin) Lisk of Galena, Sandy (John) Stienstra of Hazel Green, Connie (Jerry) McCabe of Platte-ville, Margy (Ray) Miller of Galena, and Nancy (John) Phillips of Scales Mound, three sons, John (Deb) Heim of Lena, 111., Bob (Geri) Heim of Beloit, and Dan (LuAnne) Heim of Galena; 28 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Rita Gaber of Galena, and Margaret "Punky" (Dale) Hubb of Stockton, a sister-in-law, Tootie (Lloyd) Smith of Galena; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; a brother, Robert Bauer; two sisters, Rosemary Goldthorpe and Joan Bryson; a granddaughter, Susan Stienstra, in 1983; two grandsons, Chad Schubert, in 2000, and Bill Bou-rassa, in 2003; and two brothers-in-law; Virgil Gaber and Mack Bryson. She was bora on Sept.

20, 1918, in the town of Vienna, the daughter of Bethilda (Bostad) and Hugo Mell. The family later moved to the Chicago, 111., area where she spent her growing up years and made lifelong friends. Hazel returned to Madison when she married Bernard Larson on June 25, 1938, in the parsonage of Burke Lutheran Church. Throughout her life, Hazel actively volunteered at Burke Lutheran Church and within the community. She was a quilter for many years and as a member of the church women's group donated many of her quilts for world relief efforts.

She served as a Sunday school teacher and regularly contributed to the church cookbooks She was also involved at her children's schools and as a leader for girl scouts and 4-H. Both Hazel and her husband instilled many family traditions and values in their family. She is survived by her daughter, Janice. (Warren) Somerfeld of Madison; her son, David (Laurie) Larson of Madison; six grandchildren, Anne Somerfeld of Grapevine, Texas, Susan Somerfeld of Lake Mills, Steven Somerfeld of Brecken-ridge, and Regan (J.J.) Veith, Lindsey Larson and Scott Larson, all of Madison; a brother, John (Lois) Mell of Des Plaines, her sister-in-law, Mary Mell of Madison; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, in 1984; her parents; her sisters, Agnes Farley, Elaine Gorski and Betty Rae Mell; and her brother, Del-bert Mell.

Funeral services will be held at BURKE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5720 Portage Road, at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 14, 2004, with the Rev. Russ Leeper officiating. Hanson, age 89, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2004, in Janesville, at the home of her beloved granddaughter and husband, Lynn and Tim, her caregivers. She was born on June 17, 1914, in Bear Valley, the daughter of George and Grace (Hutter) Rieder. Lorraine was united in marriage to Kermit Hanson on Jan. 9, 1936. Mrs.

Hanson was a former member of the Atwood Community Center and the Northeast Coalition. She loved to work in her garden, especially with flowers. Although she had various interests in life, her family was always first. Being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother gave her her greatest enjoyment. She will be missed and mourned by her beloved family, including her daughter, Carol (Richard) Hugo of Fitchburg; her grandchildren, Kermit (Ruth) Hugo of Madison, Valerie Hugo of Marshall, Lynn (Tim) Schommer of Janesville, and Richard Hugo II of Madison; her great-grandchildren, Rachael and Scott Hugo, Joshua and Megan Zacharias and Jacob Schommer; her sister, Valerie (Clarence Britton of Bur-bank, her brother, Rupert "Bud" (Rose) Rieder of Pittsburgh, sisters-in-law, Marion Rieder of Sepulveda, and Laura Rieder of Spring Green; and other relatives and friends.
