BU5IN1 Wisconsin State Journal, Tuesday, June 13, 2000 CHANGES Crops revel in warm weather Amtrak to add stop in Lake Geneva area Pfaff Andrews Klahn Epps There were 42 days rated suit-: able for fieldwork, according the statistics service. Paul Dietmann, a UW-Extension agent for Sauk said heavy rains have caused ah estimated $5 million damage fo crops and some fields were air ready a loss for the season after 15 inches of rain fell there over the last two weeks. "The first few rains, we were thinking this was good, and then it just wouldn't stop," Dietmann. said. "Some areas are going to be replanted.

But some of the corn fields and things, especially lower-lying fields, are still awfully wet and it's too late to put corn back in." Overall, corn averaged 8 inches last week, compared to 4 inches the previous week and 7 inches for the five-year average. The tallest corn height averages were in southern Wisconsin. Associated Press Humidity, heat and sunshine soaked up much of the surplus moisture in farmers' fields, speeding up growth for crops across Wisconsin, the state Agricultural Statistics Service reports. The warm weather helped dry low spots, and corn and soybeans were recovering from flooding and erosion in southern Wisconsin. As of Friday, topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent short, 73 percent adequate and 26 percent surplus.

Tom Cadwallader, a UW-Extension agent for Lincoln County in north-central Wisconsin, said crops looked good, but it's been difficult for farmers to complete much field work because intermittent rains have kept things wet "It's not that bad," he said. "It's a much better position to be in than others." BUSINESS Tami Pfaff has been promoted to vice president and branch manager at Bank of Southern Wisconsin's office at 4723 East Tqwne Blvd. Janet Epps has been promoted to vice president and branch manager at 1202 N. Sherman Ave. Andrews has joined The Hjebing Group, 315 Wisconsin as accountant supervisor, public relations.

Nickie Klahn office manager at Darie County Title 901 S. Whitney Way, has added duties as eScTow officer. Mike Wokasch has joined Gala Design, Sauk City, as chief executive officer. GOVERNMENT CHANGES Phil McDade has joined state Lt. Gov.

Scott McCallum's office, 1 S. Pinckney St, as press secretary. His annual salary is $39,400. AWARDS Print-Tech, 3694 Kinsman has been named fastest growing printing company in Wisconsin, and third fastest in the United States, by American Printer magazine. Compiled by Stephanie E.

Turner Associated Press Amtrak will add a stop in the Lake Geneva area to its Janesville to Chicago line beginning Thursday, Gov. Tommy Thompson said Monday. The Lake County Limited route's new stop will be in the town of Zenda, several miles from most of Lake Geneva's resorts and main business district "The Lake Geneva area is one of the great destinations for visitors to Wisconsin," Thompson, Amtrak's chairman, said in a statement "Providing daily rail service from Chicago will enhance the area's economy and attract even more interest for the new Lake County Limited service." The westbound Lake County Limited leaves Chicago at 8:15 p.m. daily and will arrive in Lake Geneva at 9:55 p.m. on its way to Janesville.

The eastbound train leaves Janesville at 6 a.m. and will arrive in Lake Geneva at 7 a.m. before arriving in Chicago at 9:20 a.m. On weekends and holidays, the train will leave Janesville at 6:15 a.m., stop in Lake Geneva at 7:15 a.m. and arrive in Chicago at 9:05 a.m.

Kevin Fleming, who owns Clothing and Irish Imports in downtown Lake Geneva and is on the board of directors for the city's Chamber of Commerce, said there are no plans yet to begin a shuttle service between the stop in Zenda and Lake Geneva. A one-way ticket between Janesville and Lake Geneva will cost $5 and a one-way ticket between Lake Geneva and Chicago will cost $11. The oneway fare between Janesville and Chicago is $15. The Janesville-to-Chicago route began operating April 15 and was the first route Amtrak introduced as part of a new growth strategy. The company also plans to begin service from Fond du Lac to connect with the six trains that run daily between Milwaukee and Chicago.

The plans call for a stop in Sturtevant along the way. Hi iiiM.imy.mi. i.UJiiw i.iHL.H.jHijii State income tax revenue is up 11 LIBOR 1 -MONTH $3 mttllon- pts of 100 pet. Total state tax collections went up 9.1 percent during the first 10 months of this spending yeaf, Zeuske said. Sales taxes were up 7.5 percent from July 1999 to the end of the revenue secretary said. But income taxes collected soared partly because taxpayers could not claim the property tax rent credit when they mailed their state tax returns. That $234 million tax break was canceled to help pay for one-time tax rebate checks', mailed in January.

But the credit has been restored for the 2000 income tax re; turns that must be filed by next April. Associated Press Wisconsin's personal income tax collections increased 11 percent during the first 10 months of this budget year as taxpayers were not able to claim the property tax rent credit this spring. State Revenue Secretary Cate Zeuske said in her quarterly economic outlook that Wisconsin's economy performed "like a champ" between July 1999 and the end of April. But she said a shortage of workers will "hamper long-term growth," especially after 2011, when the number of working-age Wisconsin residents falls. Smith Wesson, which angered some competitors and consumers when it struck a federal gun-safety deal, plans to shut down two manufacturing plants during July because of sluggish summer sales and customer backlash. WGGB-TV in Boston, citing unidentified company representatives, reported Monday that about 500 workers would be affected at plants in Springfield and Houlton, Maine. An employee who spoke on condition of anonymity Monday, confirmed that an internal memo distributed to workers Friday said it was "necessary" to close some manufacturing departments for the month of July.

A spokesman for Springfield-based Smith Wesson, the nation's largest handgun maker, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday. The company hoped its agreement with the government would bring in more contracts from city police departments. Open High Low Settle Chg. CATTLE 40,000 cents per lb. The court's unanimous decision in an age-bias dispute from Mississippi could carry profound practical importance as well for lawsuits nationwide that charge employment discrimination based on race, sex and physical disabilities. The ruling was a huge setback for employers because some fed eral appeals courts routinely had dismissed lawsuits that lacked "smoking gun" evidence of employers' discriminatory intent.

Monday's decision said circumstantial evidence often is enough to sue employers successfully. In a series of employment-bias decisions, the nation's highest court has imposed various require ments on employees who say they were treated illegally. They must show they were subjected to adverse treatment and that the employer's asserted reason for such treatment was phony. 504.0 510.0 5175 NEW YORK (AP) SptX nonfetTous metal prices Monday.
