Cress Funeral Service B4 Friday, January 31, 2003 Sex-abuse over $6 Catholics That's what the Milwaukee Archdiocese has spent, with much of it going to settlements with victims. By Melissa Mccord Associated Press MILWAUKEE The Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese has run up nearly $6.3 million in costs related to sexual abuse cases involving minors, including $4 million in settlements paid to victims, according to a document mailed to parishioners. The money went toward settling 29 claims of sexual abuse of minors by clergy, according to the document.

The archdiocese paid $3.3 million of the total cost because insurance eventually covered the rest. The information includes all the costs related to sexual abuse cases in the archdiocese's records, but spokesman Jerry Topczewski said he did not know how far back those records went. The archdiocese mailed a financial statement that included the information this week to its 210,000 Catholic households in 10 southeastern Wisconsin counties. "I want to make sure you know that I understand this is your money," Archbishop Timothy Dolan wrote in a newsletter accompanying the financial statement. "I've said many times: Bishops are great at spending the people's money, but it is your money and we must continue to be good stewards so that we are effective instruments of God's The total does not include former Archbishop Rembert Weakland's $450,000 settlement in 1998 with a former.

The archdiocese does not consider the Weakland case one of sexual abuse because the allegation never was substantiated, Topczewski said. Weakland, who retired last spring after the disclosure of the settlement, acknowledged an inappropriate relationship with the student, who wasn't a minor at the time, but said there was no abuse. The financial statement mailed this week includes an audit of the archdiocese finances for the 2001-2002 fiscal year.

The archdiocese used to send audits to each household but ended the practice three or four years ago because of the expense. It resumed this year because people demanded more financial accountability after the nationwide sexual abuse scandal, Topczewski said. With the mailing, "they hopefully have that assurance, that there is financial accountability," he said. The Catholic Church has been embroiled in a childmolestation scandal nationwide, starting with accusations that emerged in Boston. Since last year, dozens of priests out of more than 47,000 in the nation have been suspended or forced to resign on suspicion of child molestation.

The total cost for the sex abuse cases in the Milwaukee archdiocese includes $1.5 million for lawyer fees and $638,000 for therapy and other assistance. Topczewski didn't immediately know if the therapy and assistance included aid to both victims and accused priests.
