Early detection i is important. Phillips, Magdalen M. MCFARLAND Magdalen M. Phillips, age 77, passed away on Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center.

She was born on March 11, 1927, in Cudahy, a daughter of the late Louis and Pauline (Lang) Kuntz. Magdalen was a 1944 graduate of Madison East High School. She was a member of McFarland Lutheran Church, where she worked in the church office and taught Sunday school. She is survived by her husband, Charles of McFarland; a son, Mark Phillips (partner, Ken Hughes) of Fitchburg; a daughter, Mary (Bill) Gross of McFarland; four grandchildren, Amy (Jared) Thatcher of Blue Eye, Scott (Tania) Gross of Stoughton, Eric Gross of McFarland, and Lisa Gross of Madison; and two brothers, Paul (Delores) Kuntz of Madison, and Richard (Nancy) Kuntz of St. Joseph, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Alan Phillips; and two brothers, Lawrence and Raymond Kuntz. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at MCFARLAND LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5529 Marsh Road, McFarland. The Rev. Terry Peterson will officiate.

Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at OLSON-HOLZHUTER-CRESS FUNERAL HOME, McFarland.

"Carp" PORTAGE Gary L. "Carp" Schwantz, age 58, of Portage, died on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Divine Savior Healthcare Hospital. Gary Schwantz was born on April 13, 1946, in Portage, the son of Charles William Schwantz and Evelyn (Koch) Jacobson. He served his country with the U.S.

Army, in Thailand, during the Vietnam War. Gary was a police officer with the Portage Police Department for 27 years, from January 1972 until his retirement in January 1999. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jane (Miller) Schwantz; two children, Jackie (Michael) Schwantz-Raimer, Portage, and Robert (Jill) Schwantz, Portage; his brother, Calvin (Sue) Schwantz, Montello; his sister, Kathleen Schwantz, Portage; four grandchildren, Dylan, Gemini, Austin and Lilyian; a special aunt, Elaine "Toodie" Hatz, Portage; other near relatives and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Herman and Cora Schwantz, and Olive and William Koch; and a special uncle, Ken Hatz. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at ST. JOHN'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, Portage, with the Rev.

Alan Bock officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, with military graveside services provided by Portage area veterans. Friends may call on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.
