25, 2001, at his was born on June 5, 1919, in Madison, son of Henry and Mary (O'Connor) Blake. On Aug. 30, 1986, he married the Maryann Rubino in Madison. Jim had been employed by the Madison Crushing Co. as a truck driver and he was a member of Teamsters Union Local No.

Survivors include his wife, Maryann; his daughter, Samantha of Marshall; stepchildren, Karen (John) Zembruski of Medford, Valerie (Ray) Schultz of Milwaukee, Dannielle (Ed) Balthazor of Bowler, Susan (Reed) Jorgenson of Naples, Italy, Stephen Williams of Fond du Lac, and Richard Williams of Marshall; 14 grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; a sister, Kathleen Margraf of Madison; halfbrothers, Dan (Sara) Pirkl of Deerfield, and Richard (Marion) Pirkl of Madison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Bonson, Vivian Barry CENTER Vivian Barry Bonson, age 83, passed away on Sunday, Nov.

25, 2001, at Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage, following a long illness. She was born on April 27, 1918, the daughter of Glen and Pearl (McKinney) Barry. She was a department manager for JC Penney for many years. Vivian was active in the VFW Auxiliary, serving as secretary, as treasurer, and as their president in 1963, 1964, 1968 and 1969. Survivors include son, John Bonson of Portage; four grandchildren, Sean and Sarah Bonson of Madison, and Benjamin Bonson and Jeremy Wilson of Madison; and her brother, Charles Barry of Richland Center.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; and her son, James Bonson. Funeral services will be held at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL in Richland Center at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. Pastor Tom Tarver will officiate, and burial will be in the Richland Center Cemetery.

(888) 303-3910 Briggs, Fred Joseph "Freddie" WONEWOC Fred Joseph "Freddie" Briggs, age 93, formerly of Wonewoc, died on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at North Central Health Care, Wausau, after a lengthy illness. A longtime Wonewoc resident, Freddie owned many businesses and also a self employed painter. He retired in 1975, spending many winters in Naples, and the summers in Rhinelander, at a lakeside cottage. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, enjoyed traveling and playing cards.

Freddie was a vibrant man, full of boundless energy and good cheer. Freddie was born on March 17, 1908, in LaValle, the son of Joseph and Amanda (Klett) Briggs. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Erma (nee Rabuck) Wausau; four daughters, JoAnn (Russell) Kilmer of Richland Center, Shirley Huebel of Reedsburg, Barbara (Howard) Sonnenberg of Lady Lake, and Rosemary (Gerald) Schroeder of Wausau; 11 grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren: and two greatgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, Richard Huebel; three brothers, Stanley, Addison and Glen; and two sisters, Ferne Duddleston and Norma Briggs. of Reedsburg, died on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in his home. He was born on Dec. 13, 1922, in Gourock, Scotland, the son of W. and Annie (McRae) Brown.

Jack was veteran both World War II and the Korean War. On Aug. 31, 1947, he was married to the former Betty Lee O'Brien. Jack worked for many years for Hankscraft and later for Gerber Products until his retirement in 1987. He was a member and former trustee of the United Methodist Church; the Thurber-Greenwood VFW Post 1916; a former member of the Reedsburg City Council; past president of the Reedsburg Commerce, the Reedsburg Area Medical Center Foundation, Ridgeview Heights Independent Living, Corporation and United Fund chairman.

Jack was also a Little League coach for several years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, sports and gardening. He will remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father and a true gentleman. Survivors include his wife, Betty; three children, Barbara Brown and her special friend, John Michel, of St. Paul, James W.

Brown of Reedsburg, and Craig (Debbie) Brown of Lincoln, three grandchildren, Erica, Courtney and Cole; his sister, Edwina Whitehead of Oceanside, AFS daughter, Nguyen thi Thanh and her family; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim; and a brother- Ed Whitehead. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Reedsburg, with Pastor Scott Walters officiating.

Private interment, with military rites, will be in Greenwood Cemetery. There will be a visitation from noon until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. SUN PRAIRIE Leo J. Cipra, age 89, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Columbus Community Hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1912, in Lawler, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Mezera) Cipra.

On Jan. 2, 1937, Leo was united in marriage with Gladys Folbrecht in Wauzeka, Wis. In addition to his wife, Gladys, survivors include his son, Robert (Rita) Cipra of Sun Prairie; a sister, Ann McGuire of Prairie du Chien; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Cipra of Wauzeka, and Caroline Cipra of Beloit; and many nieces and nephews. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frank, Joseph and Raymond; and a sister, Loretta. Private services will be held, with burial in the Wauzeka Cemetery.

REWEY Marian T. (Wayne) Davis, age 71, of Rewey, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Mercy Health Center in Dubuque. She was born June 30, 1930, in Hazel Green, to. Robert Elizabeth (Pratt) Robbins.

Marian helped her mother and her brother on the home farm prior to her marriage to Wayne Davis March 7, 1964, in Galena, Ill. She was a member of Rewey United Methodist Church. Marian loved her grandchildren dearly, and she enjoyed her flower garden and painting ceramics. She is survived by her husband, Wayne of Rewey; two sons, Tim (Shannon) Davis and their children, Shelby and Colin, of Stoughton, and Rick (Joan) Davis and their children, Elizabeth "Ellie" and John, of Dodgeville; and six brothers and sisters, Lucille Rouse, Kenneth Robbins and Zelda Rouse, all of Platteville, George (Millie) Robbins of Cuba City, Marytel (Francis) Mittelsteadt of Loves Park, and Gerald (Pat) Robins of Wayzata, Minn. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford and Charles Robbins; and a sister, Lois Hollingshead.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at REWEY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. Burial will be in the Peniel Cemetery, rural Rewey. Family and friends may call from 4 p.m.

LANCASTER Ann W. Enloe, age 86, of Lancaster, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Grant Regional Health Center, She was born Feb. 27, 1915, in Dillwyn, the daughter of Harry L. and Mattie Virginia (Reynolds) Blanks.

She married Newman W. Enloe March 21, 1944, in Richmond, Va. Newman was in the U.S. Army as an officer, which allowed the couple to travel all over the United States. Ann was employed in Lancaster at the "Budget Shop," now known as "MaCandis." She dearly enjoyed all of the people met during those years of employment.

She was also a member of Lancaster United Methodist Church and its Ruth Circle, and was involved in many other church activities. She is survived by her husband, Newman "Colonel" Enloe, Lancaster; a daughter, Shirley (Edward Callan, San Diego, and two grandsons, Michael N. (Anna Callan, San Diego, and Daniel E. (Akiko) Callan and their daughter, Alisa M. Callan, of Kyoto, Japan.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Lyle and Terrill Blanks; and a sister, Marguerite Ballowe. Funeral services will held Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at 11 a.m. at UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, Lancaster, the Rev. Lynn Church officiating.

Gerloff, Prof. Gerald Carl MADISON Prof. Emeritus Gerald Carl Gerloff, known for his gentle dry humor, personal warmth, endless curiosity, and passion for nature, passed away Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at the Don and Marilyn Anderson HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg, Wis. Born in Aurora, on Jan.

26, 1920, to Kay and Meta Gerloff, he was raised on a farm and educated in a oneroom school house during the Depression. Thanks to FDR's New Deal programs, he was able to attend the University of Nebraska, graduating with a degree in chemistry in 1941. That same year he moved to Madison to begin graduate it the University of Wisconsin. With the outbreak of World War II he put his chemistry background to work for the Powder Company at Badger Ordnance and in Chattanooga, returning to the UW after the war to complete his Ph.D. in soils science in 1948.

He did his postdoctoral studies with Prof. Folke Skoog in the UW Lepartment of Botany immediately after completing his Ph.D. He remained there for his entre career, conducting research and teaching until his retirement in 1986. His research focused on the mineral nutrition of plants. In the 1950s he established that cobalt was critical to the nuisance blooms of bluegreen algae in Wisconsin lakes.

He continued to research the nutritional ecology of nusance aquatic plants, working extensively with the Program in Water Resources Management and the Institute of Environmental Studies at the UW. He also developed crop genotypes tolerant of nutrient deficient soils. A great advocate of conservation and restoration ecology, he served for many years on the UW Arboretum Committee and was active in the Friends of the Arboretum and the Wisconsin Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. He was an avid amateur nature photographer, and was never happier than while waiting for the clouds to part and cast the perfect light on a distant mountain. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ellen Gerloff (nee Varney); brother, Robert Gerloff; sister-in-law, Rachel of Hamilton, daughter, Barbara Gerloff of Madison; son, Robert Gerloff; daughter-in-law, Lynette Lamb; and granddaughters, Grace and Julia Gerloff, all of Minneapolis.

A memorial service will be held at the UW ARBORETUM'S MCKAY VISITOR CENTER next to the Curtis Prairie on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Arboretum, the Nature Conservancy Wisconsin Chapter, or the First Congregational Church Foundation. Honer, Norma V. MUSCODA Norma V.

(Beatty) Honer, age 84, of Muscoda, died on Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Richland Hospital, after a long and hard struggle with emphysema. She was born in Horse Creek, County, on June 30, 1917, the daughter of Dallas and Bessie (Hufseth) Beatty of Richland Center. On April 15, 1936, she married James F. Honer in Muscoda, and he preceded her in death on Sept.

25, 1977. Norma was a known athlete in her younger days, enjoying all sports and dancing. She was a talented quilt-maker and greatly enjoyed making quilts for family and friends. She loved living in her home in the country with all her loyal pet dogs, Missy and Pachie, and her pet cats, Sarah and Tommy. Norma enjoyed watching the birds outside her window and seeing the deer and other wildlife.

Her family has many treasured memories of playing euchre with her, a card game that she loved to play. It was all in good fun and her legacy will live on in future family card games. Norma also enjoyed going to casinos in the area and playing video poker, which was one of the last joys in her life and was still able to do. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family, but is at now from all her sufferpeacs, is survived by her three children, Luanne (Del) Mittlesteadt of Waunakee, Linda (Bob) Delaney, of Lake Honer of Mills, and (Linda) Verona; two grandchildren, Rob Delaney and Dawn Delaney Hutchins of Lake Mills; four greatgrandchildren, Morgan, Joe, Erin and Emily; a brother, Bob Beatty; two sisters-in-law, Gladys and Della Honer; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jimmy, on Nov.

8, 1959; and by three brothers, Wayne, Dallas and Dale Beatty. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH, Muscoda.

Father Roger Taylor will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the church. Godager Funeral Home, Muscoda, is assisting the family with their arrangements. "We love you so much, you will never be forgotten.

McGuire, Rita F. DENVER, MADISON Rita F. McGuire, age 85, died on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Porter Adventist Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs.

McGuire was born Rita Adele Fitzsimmons in Milwaukee, on Dec. 31, 1915. She graduated from Holy Angels Academy in attended Marquette University. On April 25, 1942, she married William D. McGuire.

They lived in Appleton and Neenah for 15 years and then moved to Houston, Texas, and New Canaan, Conn. They returned to Wisconsin in 1972 and settled in Madison. After her husband died in 1994, Mrs. McGuire moved to Denver, Colo. Mrs.

McGuire's most avid pastime all her life was reading. She also enjoyed music, golf and bowling. She was a volunteer at the Madison Public Library for many years, and a member of Maple Bluff Country Club. She is survived by three children, David (Cathy) of San Diego, Mary Jo (Kent) Swanson of Denver, and Bill (Marsha) of Georgetown, Texas. She is also survived by two brothers, Jack Fitzsimmons of Park Ridge, and Jerry Fitzsimmons of Birmingham, a sister, Ann Kates of Milwaukee; seven grandchildren, Jack, Bill and Cate McGuire, and Graham, Tim, Dan and Clare Swanson; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews.

There will be a visitation at the funeral home from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, 2001. A Mass of Chris- tian Burial will be held at 9 a.m.

on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at ST. ROBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH. 2224 E. Capital Drive, Shorewood.

MADISON Margaret Engeborg Juliet Barnes, age 98, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at University Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born on Aug. 11, 1903, in Mount Horeb, to the late Bennet and Julia (Haakeness) Barton. Margaret graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.A.

degree in English and taught briefly in Richland Center. She was united in marriage to the late Kenneth Crawford Barnes on March 7, 1926. They lived at 14 S. Broom which she and her mother bought when they moved to Madison after the death of her father. She and her mother ran a rooming house there until the 1940s.

She was a homemaker until the World War II years. She then worked for the agriculture department in the State Capitol building until retirement in 1965. She Kenneth spent their aner winters at Trails End Trailer Court in Weslaco, Texas. After Kenneth died in 1978, she continued to spend her winters in Texas, enjoying her church work, playing bridge and visiting with her many friends. Her home in Madison was at the Fauerbach Condominium.

Margaret was very devoted to family and church. She was the informal leader of the Fauerbach and Dewey family for many years, and served as a role model to her children and grandchildren as she was to her friends. She gave of herself of her many, life, sponsoring several children through "Compassion" and sending her own children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren to Lutherdale, a Lutheran summer camp. Margaret was also a firm believer in education and supplied college funds for all of her family. She was still active in her church and family life.

All who knew her will sorely miss her leadership, grace and love of life. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Rachel Barnes; six grandchildren, David Barnes Dewey, Peter (Maggie) Fauerbach and Kristine (Kendall) Camnitz of Madison, and Frederick (Jeanne), Karl (Jeannie) and Erik Fauerbach of Rockford, and grandchildren, Matthew McNamara, Jeff Dewey, and Sarah, John, Michael, Lindsey, Karl, Kara and Nichole Fauerbach. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth; her daughter, Barbara (Karl) Fauerbach; her grandson, John Robert Dewey; three brothers, Harland, Orvin and Benjamin; and two sisters, Maria Elenore Barton and Ruth (Clarence) Schwartz. Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, a.m.

Bick- ley, age 86, died at Stoughton Hospital on Monday morning, Nov. 26, 2001, after a brief illness. Joe was born in Stoughton on Feb. 12, 1915, a son of the late Charles and Inga (Anderson) Bickley. He married the former Viola Giddley of Stoughton on Dec.

9, 1946. She preceded him in death in 1998. They farmed in the Stoughton area following their marriage. He was also employed at the Armour and Company Condensory, and for several years prior to retirement was employed by Warren Peterson in the cement contracting business. Joe is survived by his daughters, Pat MADISON Dorothy Lucille McKiernan, a homemaker and lifelong resident of the Madison area, died on Wednesday, Nov.

21, 2001, at age 94, after a prolonged illness, at Oakwood Senior Citizens residence, where she lived and enjoyed a pleasant retirement for more than 10 years. Born in Middleton, on July 11, 1907, as the only daughter of a family of six children, to James and Josephine Quinn, she attended Edgewood Academy, and subsequently transferred to be a member of the first class of the recently completed Madison East High School. She later attended the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism. Married to James E. McKiernan, she was devoted to her four children of that marriage, but still found time to contribute an occasional article to various magazines.

A dedicated horticulturist, for many years she cultivated a variety of flowers, particularly roses, utilizing her year-round greenhouse adjacent to her home. She enjoyed foreign travel, and in her later years traveled frequently in Europe, where she had an opportunity to use the German language, which she studied but admitted she "never quite mastered." During World War II she was employed as a civilian in the communications section at Truax Field, where she served as a switchboard operator. Later she enjoyed a career of several years with the Madison Police Department in a similar capacity. She was blessed with a youthful perspective throughout her life and often commented that, although in her later years, she oftentimes still thought of herself as "a little girl." She is survived by her four loving children, Stanley (Sally) McKiernan of Glendale, Margaret (John) Cleary of Cross Plains, Nancy (Phillip) Crossen of Monona, and James McKiernan of Long Beach, together with many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Quinn; and was predeceased by her brothers James, Robert, Stanley and William Quinn.

A memorial service will be conducted at RESURRECTION CHAPEL at Oakwood, 6201 Mineral Point Road, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, with a visitation one hour before the service, and followed by a luncheon for her relatives and friends. 25, 2001, at Four Winds Nursing Home in Verona, with her loving family by her side. Victoria Reible was born on Sept. 1, 1900, on the plains of South Dakota, outside of Leola, to George and Josephine (Rohrich) Reible. She attended a one-room country school near her home, where she always said she learned to play en euchre when the teacher couldn't get to school because of the severe South Dakota winters; she had many fun stories of living on the prairie to tell her grandchildren. Victoria met and married John Minor in Leola in 1921, who she met when he was in the area harvesting grain.
