Wisconsin State Journal, Sunday, February 28, 1993 COUPLES 7H Engagements Old beau's message haunts her By Cheryl Lavin If Marcy could do it over, she would rewind her life to that Friday night in June and not listen to her phone machine. "Other people's phone machines break down, don't give them their messages," she says. "Why didn't mine fail that night?" It all began in the '60s. Marcy was a junior high student. So was Rich.

He was on the student newspaper staff. So was Marcy. Marcy's best friend told her, "Rich likes you," but Marcy liked someone else. Fast forward to junior year of high school. Marcy and Rich were both involved in a school play.

Now they liked each other. They walked home together after rehearsals. They hung out at a school hangout called "The Pit" together. Marcy wore Rich's ring. The concept of "going steady" was on its way out, but basically, they were.

A year later, they went off to college separate states and saw each other during vacations. nice and asked about him. But she hasn't called Rich yet. "I was afraid that if I called I would see him, and if I saw him I would have an affair with him," she says. Marcy's marriage suddenly seems empty.

Did she forfeit a really fabulous relationship (Rich) for a common one (her husband) because she was too young at the time to know better? Should she call? Is this a sign? She's snapping at her husband, even her kids. She wishes she had never heard that phone message, but now that she has she can't think of anything else. "I keep telling myself that life was OK up until that Friday night that he called, but then another voice says, 'It was boring, it was humdrum, it was she says. "I don't know what will make this end." Have you ever bumped into the person you were jilted for? What happened? Send your tale to Cheryl Lavin, Tales from the Front, Chicago Tribune, 435 N. Michigan Chicago, 111.

Rich went on to say that he was divorced. He just wondered how she was doing. Hoped all was well. If she felt like it, here was his phone number, two states away. Marcy's first reaction was shock.

How could this guy be gutsy enough to call her at home? Wouldn't he wonder what he was stepping into? What if her husband picked up the message? But Marcy knew Rich, after all. His whole personality was like that wave from the lacrosse field that she always recalled: confident, a little brazen, happy. And now Marcy can't get her mind off him. She went through some old boxes and found the letters he wrote her in high school and college. She called her friend Ja TALES FROM THE FRONT Things faded, but Marcy always remembered how attracted she had been to Rich.

A picture of him wearing his high school lacrosse uniform and waving at her from the playing field stuck in her mind. Years passed. Marcy was still single. Rich called to tell her he and his wife would be in Marcy's city. They met for dinner.

Rich's wife was half gushingly friendly, half wary. She made a point of playing with Rich's hands at the table, leaning across Rich in an intimate way to talk to Marcy. It was a one-night thing, and Marcy and Rich again lost contact. More time passed. Marcy got married, had two children.

Her marriage was good. Rich faded from her mind. Marcy never went to her reunions and only kept in contact with one high school friend. Now we come to the Friday night when Marcy's life changed. It was in June, a hot.
