J. Ellen Foster is a lawyer of fine repute in Iowa, though for some years all her time has been given to the temperance work. She studied law by the advice of her husband, Judge Foster, of Clinton, and waa admitted to the bar. Soon after, she won a noted liquor suit, which she argued before the supreme court, the case having been lost in the lower courts and appealed. Not long after, her house was burned in the night by.

her adversaries, but phoenix-like she passed out from the ashes which her enemies sought to make her winding sheet, infused with new zeal and clothed with added power. From that day to this she haa been electrifying her audiences from Boston to Omaha, from Minnesota to Kansas, with her masterly logic, her queenly diction, and ber thrilling eloquence. She comes to Madison for the second time, under the auspices of the Woman' Chriatlan Temperance Union, and we think the only regret will be that she does not speak in a larger house than the Congregational church, which will not be likely to accommodate all who will want to hear her.
