Saturday, open Sunday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The margin of error for the poll, conducted Dec. 4-7, was 4 percent. People in Ontario, Canada's richest, most populous province, seem the most convinced.

Forty-one percent believe in the inevitablility of joining up with big brother to the south. It's not that the 26 million people who live in Canada don't like Americans. In general, they do. Many just don't want to be Americans. The subject frequently crops up in talk about the breakup of Canada that could follow a separation by French-speaking Quebec.

If Quebec became independent, the maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland would be physically cut off from the rest of Canada. They already have close ties with New England. Canadians in general, however, tend to look up to Americans and look down on them at the same time. "Watching Americans run for office makes Canadians feel better about themselves," wrote former political powerbroker Dalton Camp. "We may have a few turkeys in our own politics but down there it's a poultry farm." Associated Press TORONTO Is it possible that Canada could become just a northern region of the United States in the next 50 years? Nearly four Canadians in 10 think so.

A whopping 67 percent already believe the United States has too much influence on the Canadian way of life. Canadian identity, and specifically the differences that separate Canadians from Americans, is the subject of continuous discussion, countless articles and not a few jokes. How does one recognize a Canadian in New York? He's the one standing at a red light in the middle of a snowstorm at 2 a.m. on a deserted street waiting for the light to turn green. Civilized, polite, unaggressive, and many will admit even boring, they bristle at the idea that Canadians are nothing but Americans writ small.

But when a Gallup poll published Thursday asked 1,006 Canadians if they thought Canada would become a part of the United States over the next half century, 37 percent said it would. A mere 52 percent said clearly it would not. Eleven percent had no opinion.
