Turkelson Hoover, age 88, of rural Blue River, passed away Sunday, April 18, 1999, at the Pine Valley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness.

She was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin on October 16, 1910 to James and Anna (HarIan) Carter. Jessie married Edward Turkelson on October 24, 1933, and he preceded her in death in April 1963. She was married on May 20, 1978, to Robert Hoover. Survivors include her husband, Robert Hoover of Blue River: five children, Betty Harwood of Janesville, Hilman Edward (Yvonne) Turkelson, Geneva, Illinois, Leslie (Janet) Turkelson of Verona, Donald (Virginia) Turkelson of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Beverly (Bruce), Larson of Hales Corners; daughter-in-law, Carol Turkelson of Naples, Florida: son-n-law, Fred (Cathy) Emshoff of Plain; and a stepson, Gary Hoover of California; four sisters, Mildred Drake of Monroe, Elizabeth (Jack) Hoover of Richland Center, Helen (Paul) Andrews of Medford, Oregon; and a brother, Donald (Beatta) Carter of Buffalo, Missouri, 2 22 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Richard Turkelson; a daughter, Barbara Emshoff; a granddaughter, Diana Emshoff: and brothers, Herbert Carter and Howard Carter.

May 27, 1940, in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, the son of William L. and Marion E. (Roberts) Ivey. He was a Rockford resident since 1967, coming here from Wisconsin. He married Mary Ann Vetrono September 30, 1971 in Freeport, Illinois.

He was employed as General Manager of Clock Tower from its inception until 1974. Also he was employed by Rockford Truck Sales as manager and most recently at Joseph Behr and Son as Yard Supervisor and Dispatcher. Survivors include, his wife, Ann of Rockford; a sister, Mary (Randall Hinds) Doerr of Janesville, Wisconsin; nephews, Anthony (Michele) Vultaggio of Janesville, and Brian P. (Karla Manternach) Zanin of Washington, D.C.; a niece, Krista Doerr of Janesville; and great nephews, Brenden and Jeffery Vultaggio of Janesville. He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Barbara.

Rockford. Jenswold, John F. MADISON John F. Jenswold, age 80, died at his home on Monday, April 19, 1999. John was born in Madison on March 22.

1919, the son of Franklin and Martha (Johnson) Jenswold. He married Dorothy Tollefson on December 5, 1942. John was a U.S. Marine Corps reserve officer for 37 years, serving in World War II and the Korean conflict. He retired from the Corps in 1979 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He graduated from Monroe High School in 1936, and received his bachelor's degree in 1941 from the University of WisconsinMadison. He received his law degree in 1948, also from the University Wisconsin. He completed postgraduate work at the U.S. Naval Law College in 1948, and subsequently served as a military judge in Korea. She transitioned from this life in Tijuana, Mexico on Thursday, April 15, 1999, at 50 years of age. She had lived over one-half of her life with ovarian cancer, which had been absent for almost 30 years when it recurred in September 1997. Connie traveled to Mexico, where she was undergoing therapy at Genesis West Medical Center. Connie graduated from Stanley High School and moved on to UW-River Falls to earn a degree in elementary education. She traveled to Ireland student teaching, then returned to teach in the Somerset, Wisconsin school system.

Soon she traveled to UW-LaCrosse a master's degree in adult education. She later returned to UW-Madison to comher Ph.D. dissertation in health education, with primary emphasis on cancer support groups. She was co-organizer of the first cancer support group in Madison. After completing her dissertation, she graduated in December 1990.

She met her soon-to-be husband, John, during that same year. Connie and John were married February 20, 1993. Connie is survived by her husband, John Barnes; her parents, Regina and Peter Smoczyk of Stanley; four brothers, Gregory of Eau Claire, Michael of Wyoming, Minnesota, Matthew Altoona, and Peter of Cadott, Wisconsin; two sisters, Christine, of Albuquerque, New Mexico Deborah of Appleton; and 13 nieces and nephews. Connie was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Kraft of Medford, Wisconsin. An ecumenical service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 1999, at 2:00 p.m.

Memorials may be addressed to Mahayana Dharma Center, John Barnes, at the above address. Burk, Leo MARKESAN Leo Burk age 95 of Markesan died on Monday April 19, 1999 at the Barrett House in Markesan. Leo was born on October 14, 1903 in the Town of Marquette, the son of Yulic and Anna Priske Burk.

He married Irene Bartol on September 19, 1939 in Princeton, she preceded him in death on November 30, 1998. Leo was a member of the Farm Bureau, and the Name Society St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kingston. His survivors include a son, Gordon Burke of Anywhere, USA two daughters, Relta (John) Dryer Lavalle and Mary (Steven) Willie of Fond du Lac; five grandson, Ryan, Mathew, Jacob, Cliff and Philip; a brother, Raymond Burk of Dalton; a daughter-in-law, Eileen Burke of Ripon; the staff and friends at the Barrett House and a host of other friends and relatives. Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; two sons, Gerald and David; two grandchildren, Shelly and Shannon; three brothers; and two sisters, Dennis, Agnes, Leahy, Vincent, John and Rosetta Burk.

at the church. A memorial has been established. Erickson, Gloria J. STOUGHTON Gloria Joyce Erickson departed this phase of physical life and moved onto the next phase of eternal life on Monday. April 19, 1999.

She was born February 26, 1927 in Owen, Wis- Madison from 1948 until 1996 and in Mineral Point from 1996 until 1999. A Certified Trial Attorney, he was a member of the American, Wisconsin, and Dane County bar associations, the National Board of Trial Advocacy, the Defense Research Institute, and the IADC. He was very active in civic and religious organizations and received recognition for his leadership roles in several, including Volunteers in Probation, the Adult Christian Education Foundation, and Bethel Outreach. He also contributed untold time and effort in attempts to assist those whom he felt were misrepresented or under-represented in the legal system. John had a special interest in railroads and became involved in organizations devoted to railroad history as well as attempts to promote and ensure continued rail service in rural areas.

A former bandleader, John had a lifelong interest in music and continued to play swing and traditional jazz until shortly before his death. John is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Jeff (Chris) and Joel (Cindy); and daughter, Jan (Bob) Jacobs; he also leaves granddaughters, Tara (Derek) JenswoldSchipper, Melinda, Lara and Elise Jenswold; a grandson, Steve Jacobs; and great-grandson, Bryce Schipper; John is also survived by nephews, Dave Tom (Jeanne) VanderMeulen; and niece, Judy (John) Crain. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, his sister, Helen VanderMeulen; and brother-in-law, Aug VanderMeulen. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 1999 at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Avenue, Madison, with the Reverend William White officiating.

"Just a closer walk with Gunderson Funeral Home Middleton Kienitz, Bonnie Gilpatrick MIDDLETON Bonnie Gilpatrick Kienitz, age 84, died on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Middleton Village Nursing Home. She was born on August 3, 1914 (she often joked it was the day World War I was declared) in San Diego, California. Bonnie was a former coordinator of foreign engineering programs for the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering in Madison prior to retirement in the 1980's.

She served in this capacity for several years, helping foreign engineering students who studied in Madison and preparing UW engineering students for study abroad. Upon retirement, she traveled around the world to visit many of the students and their families she had assisted at the University. In the 1960's she worked as a Vista Volunteer in major urban centers. Bonnie was an avid bird watcher and lover of nature. She also enjoyed swimming and diving and a good game of tennis.

She was a Friend of the University Arboretum and the Nature Conservancy, a former member of the League of Women Voters and a member of the Unitarian Church in Shorewood. Bonnie is best remembered for the high amount of energy she put into any task and for her concern for others. She is survived by her three sons, Michael and Christopher of Madison, and Peter of Winnebago; and her daughter, Gretchen of Los Angeles, California. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Professor John F. Kienitz.

In complying with her wishes, there will be no ceremony of remembrance. Bonnie always subscribed to the belief of living simply so others could simply live. Donations in her name can be made to the University of Wisconsin Arboretum or to the research of Alzheimer's Disease. The family wishes to thank Middleton Village staff and nurses, and also the staff of Appletree Villa for their concern and care of Bonnie while dealing with her Alzheimer's Loder, Arnold J. A complete obituary will appear in Thursday's editions. Schwingle, Marvin F. MADISON Marvin F. Schwingle died at home on Monday, April 19, 1999 after a long battle with cancer. He was born the youngest child to George and Mary (Kitsemble) Schwingle of Avoca, Wisconsin, on April 23, 1913.

On January 7, 1939 he married his wife, the former Mable Ray of Richland Center, Wisconsin. Marvin was employed for over 50 years as a carpenter. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and being with his family. He is survived by his wife, Mable; and two sons, Jim of Madison and John of DeForest. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Nicole and Kristen of DeForest; and a son, Ryan, of Mission Viejo, California.

Also, surviving are several nieces nephews; and a special great niece, Sharon Dieter of Muscoda, Wisconsin. Vyron was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was a member of the V.F.W. He resided in Pine Grove, Pennsvlvania prior to moving to the Sauk Prairie area in is survived by seven children, Roger (Bernadine) Warren of Prairie du Sac, Diane (John) Ziech of Baraboo, David (Cheryl) Warren of Sun Prairie, Kathy Warren of Madison, Marvin (Linda) Warren of Sun Prairie, Mary Ellen Warren of Madison, and John Warren of Lodi; 22 grandchildren; and 23 greatgrandchildren. The former Helen Stenseth was born on June 17, 1913 in Daleyville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Knute and Amanda (Swenson) Stenseth. She was married to J. Gerke on August 30, 1934.

Gruber, Frederic A. TEXAS Frederic Arthur Gruber, age 60, of Beaumont, Texas, formerly of Madison, died on Friday, April 16, 1999.

He was born on February 6, 1939 in West Allis, Wisconsin, the son of Earl and Irene Gruber. Dr. Gruber was a Navy veteran serving in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association. Dr.

Gruber received his BS degree from the UW Madison in 1963. MA from the University of HawaiiHonolulu in 1968, and his Ph.D. from the UW Madison in 1997. Dr. Gruber's most recent research focused on the causes and treatment of speech and language disorders in children.

Dr. Gruber published many scholarly articles and made national, and international symposia presentations on his original re- Instead of a special historical: project to document the WisconsinWorks program, the governor may. need to resort to a time capsule: buried in his back yard. In an early round of Joint Finance Committee hearings, the members of the committee voted: Tuesday to withdraw the Historical Society program from Gov. Tommy Thompson's proposed: 1999-2001 budget.

Under the proposal, the society. would have permission to hire; three full-time employees to compile a historical record of Wisconsin Works, or W-2, which replacedAid to Families with Dependent. Children welfare program in 1997. The project, which was estimated to cost between and $400,000, would have beenlargely funded with private money.
