Several hundred Soviet citizens were on hand to view the exhibition match, some of them sportsmen and some of them simply curious.

They saw a game that was mostly junk-ball pitches and passed balls. They also came away thinking that swapping mitts as you take the field is part of the rules. Vladimir Petrenchuk, who was filling in as state baseball coach, said the USSR Sports Committee had made "a decision to start actively developing baseball in the Soviet Union." The goal is for Soviet athletes to be in shape for international competition by 1992, when baseball makes its official debut at the Summer Olympic Games, he said. The great American pastime has finally made it to the Soviet Union. It looks a lot like baseball, but with signals and calls barked out in Russian, it doesn't sound much like baseball Soviet-style bezbol already has come a long way since its first national exhibition game last October. That game, played on the grassy center of a horse-racing track at the edge of Moscow, had no beer, no backstop and no bleacher bums.

It hardly even had any Russians playing. The brief game included athletes from Moscow State University and the Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, a college for Soviet students and those from the Third World. for information, counseling pre-arrangement details. 837-9054 238-3434 1310 Emerald Terrace 3610 Speedway fid Sun Prairie Madison and now 249-6666 Schroeder's 3325 E.
