Midvale at home, June 10. Food Price Index Climbs by WASHINGTON (P) A big jump in food prices pushed the government's wholesale price index up. eight-tenths of 1 per cent in May, the Labor Department reported Tuesday. Farm product prices rose 4.6 per cent and processed foods and feeds were up 1.8 per cent in May, said the Bureau of Labor Statistics. "This is an unusually sharp increase," said a spokesman for the bureau.

The other major sector of the wholesale index-industrial raw materials rose one-tenth of 1 per cent. The over -all rise brought the wholesale index to 112.8. This means that it cost $112.80 last month to buy what would have been $100, worth of wholesale goods during the 1957-59 period on which the index is based. Major price increasesi included 18.6 per cent for fruits and vegetables, 8.1 per cent for livestock, 6.1 per cent for processed meats, poultry and fish, and 2.1 per cent for sugar.
