State Journal staff Led by a win in the mile by 1999 NCAA cross country champion Erica Palmer, the University of Wisconsin women's track and field team opened its 2000 season by playing host to the Badger Track Classic on Saturday. Palmer edged teammate Stephanie Pesch to win the mile in a personal best of 4:45.75. Pesch ran a personal best to finish second in 4:45.82. Both times were NCAA provisional qualifying marks. UW won seven events at the meet, which was held at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center and wasn't scored, and swept the top places in three events.

Iran in World Cup rematch When the U.S. soccer team played Iran two years ago, it was in the World Cup, soccer's most important stage. When the teams meet in a rematch today in the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, it will be only an exhibition game, but it will be the first match between the teams on U.S. soil. i think we're treating it as an important game, but the implications come from the public," said Eric Wynalda, the U.S.

scoring leader with 33 goals in 102 games. "I do think it was a brutal loss that we suffered in the World Cup, and it would be nice to redeem ourselves." On June 21, 1998, the Iranians upset the Americans, 2-1, at Lyon, France. That loss shocked the U.S. team, which finished 0-3 and last in the 32-nation field. "We could be playing anybody on Sunday.

The importance is that we're playing our first match of 2000, and it's an important year for us," U.S. coach Bruce Arena said. "I want to see us play well as a team. Sometimes you play well as a team and you don't win, I realize that. But we want to be a little bit greedy and do both." NHL Penguins' Brooks suspended for tirade Pittsburgh Penguins coach Herb Brooks was suspended indefinitely by the NHL Saturday for a profanity filled tirade at a television commentator.

After the Penguins' 4-3 loss at Colorado Thursday, Brooks had to be restrained by security from going after Avalanche television play-by-play announcer John Kelly. Kelly suggested Penguins forward Matthew Barnaby faked an injury after being hit by Colorado's Alexei Gusarov with 27 seconds left in the game. Barnaby, who called the suspension "ridiculous," was on the ice, apparently unconscious, for about a minute before being taken to the locker room. No penalty was called. "Did you make that call on Barnaby?" Brooks shouted.

"You say he has a tendency to embellish? What the hell kind of call was that? You aren't half the person your dad was." Kelly's father, Dan, is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame who was the voice of the St. Louis Blues for 21 years. The NHL said a hearing on the case will be scheduled for next week. 1 1 :30 a.m. NFC Divisional playoff, Minnesota at St.

"The fact that I'm 5 ahead is an enviable spot, but it doesn't mean it is insurmountable," he said. "I know what it takes.

I've done it a bunch of times. There's a bunch of young lions behind me, and they are not just going to let me win." Parnevik, who started the day seven strokes behind Azinger, closed with birdies on the last two holes for a 4-under 66. He is at 201 with Appleby, who shot a 68. Madison's Jerry Kelly shot 71 to stand at 203. Edgerton's Steve Strieker carded a 69 for a 207.

The Shrine game no longer attracts the nation's top players. The East-West game, which in the past featured players such as John Elway and Brett Favre, gets rejected by a lot of top players because unlike some other all-star games it does not pay players or coaches. Richter would have to give his blessing, get the necessary support from Bascom Hill, then prepare to give Alvarez all the keys to the building.

The bet here is that Alvarez would embrace such a plan. It would be a powerful message that his presence is needed at UW well into the 21st century. And it would all but guarantee his commitment to the Badgers no matter what opportunities came down the road. What do you give a man who has everything? In the case of Alvarez, a sense of perpetual belonging. Associated Press No one was willing to concede The Office Depot title to Karrie Webb Saturday.

The reliance on football as a revenue source by the UW Athletic Department is only going to get heavier and more complicated, especially now with plans for a preferred seating plan and serious talk of renovating Camp Randall Stadium.

Question is, if Alvarez indeed wants more responsibility, can such a format be accommodated? Right now, the UW football program is ably monitored by associate athletic director Al Fish, who then reports to athletic director Pat Richter. The six touchdown passes Marcus Knight caught for Michigan this season earned him a place in the East-West Shrine Bowl. The four he caught Saturday made him the star of the nation's oldest college all-star game. Knight had scoring receptions of 10, 8, 8 and 6 yards as the East defeated the West, 35-21, in the edition of the Shrine game.

Three of those TD passes came from Florida's Doug Johnson, the fourth from Michigan teammate Tom Brady. No, I've never, never, never had a game like that," Knight said.
